LCBT is offering a new, one of a kind Level 2 Beauty Therapy course running from 10am to 2pm four days a week to meet the needs of those with children at school or using childcare whilst studying and anyone else who cannot commit to a full day’s study. We currently have a number of places still available on this course, so if it appeals to you or would suit someone you know, please contact us using the details at the end of this message for more information or to enrol.
Returning to study for a new career after having children can be daunting for some but beauty therapy is, in many ways, an ideal career for those with childcare responsibilities, as it lends itself well to self-employment with flexible hours or part-time work opportunities and is much less likely to involve you taking work home with you than many other careers. One of our successful learners, Kavita Bundhoo, shares her experience of choosing beauty therapy as a career change after having children:
I worked in Shoe Retail since leaving school for ten years until I had my first son and rose to Assistant Branch manager for Office Shoes in Covent Garden. I started getting my nails done about a year before I started at LCBT and being the perfectionist that I am, I felt I could do a better job than the salons I was going to! Also, I had gained a lot of experience of working with people face to face and felt confident enough to have a go.
Attending LCBT for a year to gain my NVQ Level 2 and 3 in Nail Services was a good experience for me; I enjoyed the practical training and making friends with classmates, who I still keep in touch with. It has been a great stepping stone to get back out there in the real world after having children. I was a quite nervous before starting the course but after a few weeks I got into the swing of things. I'd say to anyone who’s interested in studying:
“Be sure it’s the path you want to take and keep at it. Don’t be too shy to ask for help; it will be worth it in the end.”
I was only doing two days a week, so it meant the kids and I were having a twelve hour day on the days I was at college, but having said that, we did get through it. I am not a quitter and I think my kids are now the same. My daughter is seven and I used to practise painting her nails, while I was at LCBT. She can be quite critical, so I think she is definitely a mini me in the making! I had a positive experience from attending LCBT and think that the 10am - 2pm course is a fab idea for parents.
Since finishing the course, I moved to the north-east of England, to a little seaside town called Redcar and am starting my own mobile nail technician business. I have gained more confidence in myself and feel more positive about my family’s future.
